Five Things to do in San Diego Off-the-Beaten-Path

San Diego has earned its place as “America’s Finest City” with beautiful year-round weather, pristine beaches and endless entertainment. Many know about San Diego’s top attractions like SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo and the historic Gaslamp district; but, there’s so much more to this diverse SoCal city.

Here are five of our favorite off-the-beaten-path activities and attractions:

1. Spend a day on Coronado Island: Leave your car on the mainland and take the ferry over to this quaint yet bustling island right across the bay from downtown San Diego. Once there, rent beach cruisers from Bikes and Beyond and set off on a leisurely ride around the island’s paved bicycle path. Be sure to make a stop at the famous Moo Time Creamery for an afternoon treat.

2. Get Competitive at the Del Mar Racetrack: See some of the country’s best thoroughbred race horses compete at this gorgeous ocean view track located “where the turf meets the surf” in northern San Diego.  Try your hand at a wager and enjoy delicious food and drink from one of the onsite restaurants or bars.  Embrace tradition by dressing up and wearing your favorite hat.

del mar3.  Work up a Sweat at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve: Become one with nature without leaving the city at the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve (right next to the famous Torrey Pines golf course). Find parking along the beach outside the entrance to the park to avoid the $20 parking fee, and walk alongside the paved road up the cliff. Once at the top, enjoy the dramatic views before heading down one of the trails to the beach.

4. Enjoy the View from Sunset Cliffs: There is no better place to view the spectacular San Diego sunset than Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach. Check your weather app for the time of sundown, and arrive about 30 minutes before. Take a seat on one of the benches or find your own natural seat on the sculpted stone cliffs while witnessing a sunset to remember. Be sure to bring a blanket…once the sun sets, the temperature cools down.

sunset cliff5. Take to the Open Ocean for a Day of Fishing: Unleash your adventurous side with a sport fishing charter excursion. Experts lead full or half-day tours in the open ocean, seeking yellowfin tuna, yellowtail and more. Regardless of the size of your catch, you’re sure to return with great memories.

For a full San Diego experience, enjoy overnight accommodations at the newly renovated beachfront Blue Sea Beach Hotel or uptown Sommerset Suites Hotel. For more information or to book, call toll free 800-720-0223.

Farmers Markets Heat Up the Coast this Summer

Farm fresh produce, local bounty, and artisan treasures can only mean one thing … the return of summer. Each coastal farmers market brings its own charm and flavor and Pacifica Hotels’ convenient locations make it easier than ever for you to sample the fare.

San Diego

“Americas Finest City” has its fair share of farmers markets, but our favorite is the Pacific Beach Farmers Market, located a short 10-minute walk from our Blue Sea Beach Hotel. The market offers live music to entertain you as you shop a diverse selection of produce, eggs, meat, dairy and fresh baked bread.

Day and time: Tuesdays 2-7pm

Location: 901 Garnet Avenue, Pacific Beach, Ca, 92109

Manhattan Beach

The Manhattan Beach Farmers Market offers a variety of artisan foods – both hot and prepared – as well as a large selection of organic produce.

Day and time: Tuesdays 11am-5pm

Location: 13th Street and Morningside Drive, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266

Enjoy the bustle of the market in downtown Manhattan Beach before strolling down the woodchip trail and retreating to the comforts of The Belamar Hotel.

Date and time: Thursdays 9am-2pm

The seaside town of Pismo Beach holds its farmers market right on the pier. Find fresh produce and purchase local handmade crafts as you watch the waves roll in.

Day and time: Wednesdays 3-7pm

Location: Pismo Beach Pier (100 Pomeroy Ave, Pismo Beach, CA 93449)

Stock up and make yourself a picnic on the beach or enjoy your finds from an oceanfront room at the Sandcastle Inn.

Cambria

The farmers market in the charming city of Cambria offers solely food, but that food is some of the most high-quality fare around. Fruits and vegetables, as well as homemade jams, honeys and ciders tempt taste buds.

Date and time: Fridays 2:30-5:30pm

Location: 1000 Main Street, Cambria, CA 93428

When you’re done at the market, treat yourself to a view on your private deck overlooking the ocean at one of Pacifica’s Moonstone Beach adjacent hotels.

Half Moon Bay

The Half Moon Bay farmers market is held at Shoreline Station where you can support the efforts of a diverse group of farmers, including established family farms and emerging young farmers in the area, as well as local businesses and community-serving nonprofits.

Date and time: Saturdays 9am-1pm

How to Celebrate the Fourth of July on the California Coast

Many would say that summer’s crowning celebration is marked by the red, white and blue that paints the night sky in honor of America’s National Independence Day. From San Diego to San Francisco, the Fourth of July festivities are abundant. To help you choose, we’ve created a list of the California coast’s best and brightest Independence Day celebrations:

San Diego

For those who want an impressive fireworks show, San Diego is the place to be. Known as one of the largest fireworks displays in the country, the Big Bay Boom July 4th Fireworks event draws hundreds of thousands of visitors and locals every year for their spectacular presentation.

Because of San Diego’s unique geographic location, fireworks can be seen from various locations along the waterfront and beyond. With the bright blasts discharged simultaneously from barges placed strategically around the Bay off Shelter Island, Harbor Island, Embarcadero North, Seaport Village, Embarcadero South Marina Park, Coronado Ferry Landing and Imperial Beach, onlookers get quite a show.

The impeccably choreographed display dazzles spectators with a colorful explosion of light and sound for nearly 20 minutes. Fireworks are set to begin at 9 p.m. Extra parking and shuttles will be available. For more information, visit: http://www.bigbayboom.com/

For travelers wanting to enjoy San Diego overnight, the newly renovated Blue Sea Beach Hotel and Sommerset Suites offer convenient and comfortable accommodations and easy access to Fourth of July celebrations, as well as the area’s best attractions. For reservations call 800.720.0223.

Marina del Rey

Known as one of the top places to view fireworks in Los Angeles, Marina del Rey offers a variety of locations from which to picnic and watch the sky light up. Though fireworks can be seen throughout most of the Marina, the most popular viewing spots include:

• Fisherman’s Village, 13755 Fiji Way (2 blocks west of Lincoln Blvd.)
• Burton Chace Park, 13650 Mindanao Way (1 block west of Admiralty Way)
**This location will have speakers set-up near the Helmsman statue, allowing spectators to watch the display and  listen to synchronized music on KXLU 88.9 FM
• Marina Beach (Mother’s Beach), 4101 Admiralty Way (1 block south of Washington Blvd.)

burton-chace-park_dad-with-son-in-wagonWhat witnesses will experience is a 20-minute fireworks display that dances above the water while Classical station KXLU 88.9FM blasts a synchronized musical playlist. While the show doesn’t begin until 9 p.m., the community will be celebrating all day long with dining events, cruises, family activities, a street parade, Venice Beach contests and more! The first 500 people who stop by the Marina del Rey Visitors Center between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. can snag some patriotic giveaways like flags, necklaces and pinwheels.

For more information and additional details, visit: http://www.visitmarinadelrey.com/files/docs/fourth-of-july-fireworks-show-flyer-2014-mdr.pdf

The conveniently located Hilton Garden Inn Marina del Rey and Jamaica Bay Inn are both perfectly situated to give travelers an up-close view of the celebration. With breathtaking views and numerous outdoor areas to choose from, it would be hard to miss the Marina’s fireworks! For reservations call 800.720.0223.

Pismo Beach

It doesn’t get more classic California than in Pismo Beach, which offers a full day of Fourth of July festivities. Bringing locals and visitors together, the celebration includes a day of music, food, crafts, art, and a fireworks display from the town’s famous 1,200 foot pier. General admission is free.

fireworks2To settle in and enjoy festivities, the newly remodeled beachfront Sandcastle Inn, provides visitors with abundant outdoor seating and easy access to the entertainment. Spyglass Inn and Cottage Inn further up the road and positioned on a bluff also offer majestic views of the activities below and horizon beyond. For reservations call 800.720.0223.

Cambria

In one of America’s most charming beach communities, travelers can partake in a full day of Fourth of July events alongside the locals. The oceanfront Shamel Park is the site of the annual celebration from 10 a.m.-10 p.m., which includes family events, music and BBQ. The schedule includes:

11 a.m.: Opening Ceremonies

11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Live Music by “Stellar”

Half Moon Bay

The coastal town just outside San Francisco celebrates Independence Day with classic small town spirit at the Ol’ Fashioned 4th of July Parade down historic Main Street. Starting at noon, the festival, fronted by the San Mateo County Sheriffs and CalFire, honors the holiday with floats, marching bands, community service groups, classically cool cars, decorated bikes, “Pooches on Parade”, youth sports teams, dance and theatre troupes, a Color Guard by the American Legion, and local dignitaries and celebrities. Legendary comedian and political satirist, Will Durst, will serve as parade grand marshal.

Following the parade, Fourth of July fans can gather for the town picnic, which features food, music and family entertainment. Event starts at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Coastside Post.

Additionally, the Half Moon Bay Lions Club will host its annual 4th of July Pancake Breakfast at Mac Dutra Park beginning at 8 a.m.
