The Wayfarer: New hostel puts the “funk” in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone neighborhood

Wayfarer_09It’s no secret that Spanish colonial architecture overcomes your senses upon entering Santa Barbara. But one secret that is the city’s newest gem is The Wayfarer, a new contemporary hostel located in the vibrant Funk Zone part of town.

The modern aesthetics will give the everyday traveler who happens to stroll in a whole new feel to the city. While the exterior of the hostel still embodies the classic Spanish Santa Barbara style, the interior mirrors its neighborhood’s Funk Zone artsy theme, appealing to modern minds and travelers alike.

An array of texture and color all the way from exposed brick walls to iridescent mermaids to faux fur are just a few things that differentiate this hostel from any other. The décor in particular touches up the unique appeal of the place.

“We designed this hostel with the modern traveler in mind,” said Matt Marquis, President of Pacifica Hotels, “By integrating soothing colors, playful decorative accents, communal spaces and upscale fixtures, we achieved something that is truly unique. The Wayfarer has style, but it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and we’ve found our guests love that.”

Charm and attraction can be found in every room. The front room alone is an immediate friendly “What’s up!” to travelers as it looks more like a bar with your favorite bartenders than a conventional lobby. It’s also embellished with barstools and a craft soda bar station with homemade rotating carbonated drinks.

Wayaer_12

It doesn’t end there, the hostel’s common areas give a playful pop to the atmosphere with its backlit robot statues, vibrant library books and teal back-painted glass. Guests are encouraged to meet up and kickback with a book or indulge in classic board games like Jenga or Connect Four. A shared kitchen, outdoor heated pool, and funky art pieces located around the hostel all add to the artistic appeal which makes this hostel completely unique to Santa Barbara.

Private rooms and shared rooms are both available. Each bed is custom-made and features a whitewashed oak finish, padded headboards, and denim-style upholstery, as well as built-in lighting. Beds are dressed with faux fur throws and yellow tiger pillows, highlighting a glam, yet playful flair to the rooms. A slight tug on vintage luggage straps reveals a fold-down twin Murphy bed in each private room, ideal for sleeping an additional guest.

Wayfarer_06There’s so much more to explore at The Wayfarer and beyond. Deemed as one of the “5 Boutique Hostels That Are Better Than a Hotel” by Money Magazine and “Cool, yet cheap: Stylish Hostels around the world” by USA Today, one step into this eccentric getaway is an extra kick to your more-than-ordinary Santa Barbara visit.

Five Things to do in San Diego Off-the-Beaten-Path

San Diego has earned its place as “America’s Finest City” with beautiful year-round weather, pristine beaches and endless entertainment. Many know about San Diego’s top attractions like SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo and the historic Gaslamp district; but, there’s so much more to this diverse SoCal city.

Here are five of our favorite off-the-beaten-path activities and attractions:

1. Spend a day on Coronado Island: Leave your car on the mainland and take the ferry over to this quaint yet bustling island right across the bay from downtown San Diego. Once there, rent beach cruisers from Bikes and Beyond and set off on a leisurely ride around the island’s paved bicycle path. Be sure to make a stop at the famous Moo Time Creamery for an afternoon treat.

2. Get Competitive at the Del Mar Racetrack: See some of the country’s best thoroughbred race horses compete at this gorgeous ocean view track located “where the turf meets the surf” in northern San Diego.  Try your hand at a wager and enjoy delicious food and drink from one of the onsite restaurants or bars.  Embrace tradition by dressing up and wearing your favorite hat.

del mar3.  Work up a Sweat at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve: Become one with nature without leaving the city at the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve (right next to the famous Torrey Pines golf course). Find parking along the beach outside the entrance to the park to avoid the $20 parking fee, and walk alongside the paved road up the cliff. Once at the top, enjoy the dramatic views before heading down one of the trails to the beach.

4. Enjoy the View from Sunset Cliffs: There is no better place to view the spectacular San Diego sunset than Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach. Check your weather app for the time of sundown, and arrive about 30 minutes before. Take a seat on one of the benches or find your own natural seat on the sculpted stone cliffs while witnessing a sunset to remember. Be sure to bring a blanket…once the sun sets, the temperature cools down.

sunset cliff5. Take to the Open Ocean for a Day of Fishing: Unleash your adventurous side with a sport fishing charter excursion. Experts lead full or half-day tours in the open ocean, seeking yellowfin tuna, yellowtail and more. Regardless of the size of your catch, you’re sure to return with great memories.

For a full San Diego experience, enjoy overnight accommodations at the newly renovated beachfront Blue Sea Beach Hotel or uptown Sommerset Suites Hotel. For more information or to book, call toll free 800-720-0223.

How to Celebrate the Fourth of July on the California Coast

Many would say that summer’s crowning celebration is marked by the red, white and blue that paints the night sky in honor of America’s National Independence Day. From San Diego to San Francisco, the Fourth of July festivities are abundant. To help you choose, we’ve created a list of the California coast’s best and brightest Independence Day celebrations:

San Diego

For those who want an impressive fireworks show, San Diego is the place to be. Known as one of the largest fireworks displays in the country, the Big Bay Boom July 4th Fireworks event draws hundreds of thousands of visitors and locals every year for their spectacular presentation.

Because of San Diego’s unique geographic location, fireworks can be seen from various locations along the waterfront and beyond. With the bright blasts discharged simultaneously from barges placed strategically around the Bay off Shelter Island, Harbor Island, Embarcadero North, Seaport Village, Embarcadero South Marina Park, Coronado Ferry Landing and Imperial Beach, onlookers get quite a show.

The impeccably choreographed display dazzles spectators with a colorful explosion of light and sound for nearly 20 minutes. Fireworks are set to begin at 9 p.m. Extra parking and shuttles will be available. For more information, visit: http://www.bigbayboom.com/

For travelers wanting to enjoy San Diego overnight, the newly renovated Blue Sea Beach Hotel and Sommerset Suites offer convenient and comfortable accommodations and easy access to Fourth of July celebrations, as well as the area’s best attractions. For reservations call 800.720.0223.

Marina del Rey

Known as one of the top places to view fireworks in Los Angeles, Marina del Rey offers a variety of locations from which to picnic and watch the sky light up. Though fireworks can be seen throughout most of the Marina, the most popular viewing spots include:

• Fisherman’s Village, 13755 Fiji Way (2 blocks west of Lincoln Blvd.)
• Burton Chace Park, 13650 Mindanao Way (1 block west of Admiralty Way)
**This location will have speakers set-up near the Helmsman statue, allowing spectators to watch the display and  listen to synchronized music on KXLU 88.9 FM
• Marina Beach (Mother’s Beach), 4101 Admiralty Way (1 block south of Washington Blvd.)

burton-chace-park_dad-with-son-in-wagonWhat witnesses will experience is a 20-minute fireworks display that dances above the water while Classical station KXLU 88.9FM blasts a synchronized musical playlist. While the show doesn’t begin until 9 p.m., the community will be celebrating all day long with dining events, cruises, family activities, a street parade, Venice Beach contests and more! The first 500 people who stop by the Marina del Rey Visitors Center between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. can snag some patriotic giveaways like flags, necklaces and pinwheels.

For more information and additional details, visit: http://www.visitmarinadelrey.com/files/docs/fourth-of-july-fireworks-show-flyer-2014-mdr.pdf
